Committed to making a difference in the achievement gap, Euna McGruder is a demonstrated leader in education. As a Principal in the Baltimore school system, McGruder has made strong strides since her appointment in 2010. At the Middle School for the Arts at Booker T. Washington, a Title I middle school that is 98% economically disadvantaged, 100% minority, and designated by the state to be a turnaround school, Euna McGruder measurably increased student proficiency in mathematics and reading. She also earned the school a city award for having the highest increase in attendance among all Title I Baltimore City public schools. Using her leadership to demonstrate her faith in the creative promise of her students, McGruder established an Arts program that would enhance and sustain the artistic growth of the student body.
In her role as Principal of the middle school, McGruder has utilized her expertise in managing staff, human resources, and operations toward the goal of an efficient school environment. McGruder increased the number of Teach for America Corps members on staff and developed a rigorous and selective screening process for employment. She implemented a New Teacher Support Program and organized a teaching cadre that fostered collaboration, growth, and learning among teachers. In addition, she created a Leadership Cohort which provided leadership-learning opportunities for staff who were interested in school leadership. McGruder is also responsible for developing and implementing several initiatives to improve the community perception of the school as well as its internal culture and climate.
Euna McGruder previously spent close to ten years in the DeKalb County public school system in Georgia, serving as Assistant Principal and Principal of several schools. Her achievements in these roles included earning awards of distinction for two schools.
McGruder received a Master of Science in Teaching Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. She subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Leadership in Educational Administration from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Euna McGruder is actively involved in her community, supporting charities and providing life coaching and youth mentoring. She enjoys walking, Pilates, and creative writing.
